Game Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredders Revenge

I have always been a fan of everything Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT), especially the arcade game. I couldn’t wait to start playing this!

TMNT Shredders Revenge is an homage to the original Arcade game. It is a classic side scroller beat ‘em up action game. I love this genre and play a lot of them. TMNT stands out from many perspectives while also playing it safe, but that’s not really a bad thing.

Where it stands out most is the art style and the soundtrack. The game looks absolutely gorgeous. The art style is perfect. It looks modern but at the same time has that classic look and feel to it. The soundtrack is also one of those soundtracks that I find myself paying more attention to than the game at some points, it was that good.

If you played any games like this, you know what you are getting into. Side-scrolling action. A beat ‘em up game can’t be a beat ‘em up game without an elevator fight scene, right? Right?

All the characters have different stats and attributes and all play differently enough to keep you engaged but not so different that you are compelled to play through the story mode with all of them. Some have a higher attack or more range but it still comes down to beating everything in front of you.

The gameplay is where TMNT plays it the safest. They did not do anything to really innovate or bring something new to the genre. However, it’s so much fun to play you won’t care all that much. By the end of the short story, the game will start to get repetitive but it was always a great time.

TMNT offers 6 player cooperative play. This sounds great in theory but in practice, it’s a confusing mess. I could not follow any of the action. I was often confused about where I was and what was even going on. This does change slightly when you get to a boss fight. Boss fights are a little easier to follow what’s going on but it still can be disorienting at times.

TMNT Shredders Revenge was a fun trip down memory lane. It may not bring anything new to the genre but it was a lot of fun to play and replay over and over again. The art style and the soundtrack are absolutely perfect. This was a game that I had high expectations for and while it didn’t exceed any of my expectations it met them all.

Final Score: 8/10
